Crowded teeth and incorrectly developing jaws can be seen in 3 out of 4 children in Australia. These problems can be seen from as early as 5 years of age; the earlier these are addressed; the better result are achieved.
Recent research has shown that crowded(crooked) teeth, incorrect jaw development and other orthodontic problems are not only caused by big teeth in small jaws or hereditary factors. Mouth breathing, snoring, tongue thrusting, thumb sucking and reverse swallowing are the other causes of such problem. These causes are called myofunctional habits.Open mouth breathing and snoring associated with allergic rhinitis and asthma also contribute to incorrect jaw development.
Orthodontic treatments limited to putting braces on the teeth with ignoring the real causes behind the malalignment of the teeth, does not address the underlying problem. Such treatment will have the much higher risk of relapse. When orthodontic braces are removed, the teeth will go back to the crowded position as the underlying factor has not been corrected.
Park Street Dental is proud of having a well – known specialist orthodontist who has a genuine interest in holistic orthodontic treatment of children and adults. Dr Geoffrey Squires is an honorary associate lecturer(orthodontics) in the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney.
Our principal dentist, Dr Neda Gorji has a special interest in working with children and also addressing their poor myofunctional habits. She is a qualified Myobrace practitioner and has an extensive experience in working with children.
Myofunctional orthodontic techniques are normally pre-orthodontic treatments to address the children poor oral habits (myofunctional habits). The treatment is done through the use of a series of removable dental appliances(Myobrace) that are worn for just 1-2 hours each day and overnight while sleeping.
Daily use of the Myobrace combined with regular activities (to improve breathing, muscle function and tongue posture) results in straighter teeth and improved function leading to a better facial development, a healthier smile and a much less complex orthodontic treatment in the future.
